On Thursday, August 14, 2025, Monsignor Terry Stewart will be showing “Of Gods and Men” as part of his “Movies with Monsignor” summer series.
Time Magazine described “Of Gods and Men” as a “Luminous Tale of Faith and Heroism.” It was awarded the Grand Prize at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival and was the winner of the Best Foreign Language Film by the National Board of Review.
“This movie is very, very powerful,” said Monsignor Terry of the film. “Whenever I find a film that is outstanding in my opinion, I buy it for my library and this one is really powerful.”
“Of Gods and Men” is a true story about a monastery of Catholic monks, Trappists like Thomas Merton, who live in a Muslim community in Tibhirine, Algeria. By their kindness and helpfulness, they soon become accepted and loved by the Muslim community. The monastery has a clinic that is open to the surrounding villagers and they come regularly for medical help. The monks raise crops and make honey, which they sell in the local market. Some of the villagers even come to them for counseling and conversation among friends.
“It’s a lovely film and extremely powerful,” said Monsignor Terry. “I hope you will be able to experience this dramatic story of the Trappist monks and their heroic lives even in the face of danger.”
Popcorn and water will be served.
